Fine-Medium to Heavy Coarse Roll-On Texture

The roll-on texture range runs from a fine to medium coarse grade through to a heavy coarse grade, so the finished texture can be matched to the look the project calls for. The fine-medium grade produces a gentler, more restrained peaked texture and typically covers around 15m² per pail, while the heavier grade builds a much more pronounced, coarse texture coating and typically covers 8–10m² per pail — the extra material going into the deeper, heavier profile. In both cases, different roller sleeves produce genuinely different effects, so the same base coating can be worked to suit a range of design briefs without changing products.

The Heavy Coarse Option: A Classic Tyrolean-Style Finish

For a heavier, more traditional look, the coarse grade roll-on texture is sometimes referred to in the trade as a Tyrolean finish. Rather than being left as raw peaks, the texture is trowelled off just prior to drying, producing a clean stucco effect rather than a rough peaked surface. It’s a technique that gives a genuinely bolder, roll on render-style appearance (though it remains a texture coating applied over a render base, rather than the render itself), and it suits heritage-style facades, feature walls or any project where a heavier, more traditional exterior texture coating is part of the brief.

Texture Coating for Exterior Walls — and Interior Applications Too

Unitex roll-on texture finishes are suitable for a wide range of applications, from exterior walls through to interior walls and ceilings, balustrades, beams, columns, in-fill panels, entrances and lobbies. As an exterior wall texture coating, the heavier roll-on grades are particularly well suited to irregular or roughly finished surfaces, since the thicker texture provides excellent hiding of shrinkage cracks in a single coat. Unitex roll-on texture finishes are suitable for use over surfaces prepared with render from the Unitex Specialty Renders range, and are equally at home over prepared plaster, brick, cement blocks, FRC sheets and aerated concrete.

For bare EPS foam, Polymer Render and DryPoly Render — reinforced with alkali-resistant fibreglass mesh — provide the substrate, while Base Board Render and BBR Render build and level Unitex Base Board cladding panels ready for the roll-on finish. Freshly applied cement-rich renders need a minimum of 28 days to cure before a roll-on texture is applied, and moisture content should be checked with a moisture meter beforehand. Where a wall has more than one render product applied across it, a coat of Cembond Substrate Sealer helps even out absorbency so the roll-on texture coating dries to a consistent finish across the whole surface.

Durable, Low-Maintenance Performance

The strong binding power of the acrylic co-polymer used in Unitex roll-on texture finishes results in a genuinely impact-resistant coating — one that withstands scuffing and hard knocks well once fully cured. The finish is also low-tack, meaning dirt pick-up is minimal, and is designed to be self-cleaning from ordinary weathering effects, so the coating keeps its appearance for years rather than needing regular maintenance. Depending on coating thickness, Unitex roll-on texture finishes carry a minimum protective and service life of 10 years. Like all Unitex Applied Texture Finishes, the range is formulated with a water permeability factor that rainproofs the exterior while still allowing water vapour from the substrate to escape, and the full Unitex coating system is fire tested to AS/NZS 1530.3:1999. Colour is integrated through the full film thickness rather than sitting on the surface, with a colour range spanning full colour hues through to pastel shades.

Some people search for a roll on texture paint or rolled on texture paint when what they’re really after is this style of heavier, textured exterior finish — and it’s a fair comparison to draw. A standard retail texture paint is typically a thinner, decorative coating, whereas a genuine roll-on texture coat like the Unitex range is a heavier-bodied acrylic coating built for exterior performance: impact resistant once cured, low-tack to minimise dirt pick-up, and rated for a minimum 10-year protective service life depending on coating thickness. Weather Conditions and Curing

As with all Unitex Applied Texture Finishes, roll-on texture coatings shouldn’t be applied if rain is forecast within four hours, or if temperatures sit outside roughly 10°C to 35°C. Freshly applied coatings need protection from rain, other moisture and frost for at least 48 hours, and full curing — where the coating is protected from impact damage — takes 3 to 4 weeks. Site preparation matters too: windows, doors and adjoining surfaces should be masked and protected before work begins, and any scaffolding required must be erected by a qualified, certified operator in line with local building regulations.
